Caltopo USGS Topo in Google Earth

This is a KML network link for displaying the Caltopo high resolution (7.5') version of the USGS topographic maps in Google Earth. Caltopo is a site for planning and documenting hiking trips with the ability to print maps. From https://sectionhiker.com/caltopo-a-great-online-mapping-and-planning-tool-for-hikers/:

Caltopo was originally developed for search and rescue work by Matt Jacobs (a different Matt), who loaded it with California-specific mapping data. He later added data for the entire United States but the original name stuck.

Read more about the origin of the data set here and about the story behind the website here.

For some information on how it works, please see the main page and the FAQ.

To get started, simply download caltopo-usgs-topo-overlay-for-google-earth.kmz (please log in first, see here why) and open it in Google Earth. Or checkout all 2 North American Maps map overlays on this site.
